On the eve of the Ayodhya Ram Temple Consecration, clashes erupted between two communities during a vehicle rally in Mira Road on 21 January. The Mumbai police arrested 13 people and detained four minors in connection with the incident.

Currently, a lot of old and unrelated videos and images with false claims about the Mira Road riots are circulating on social media. Particularly, a video is going viral that shows police officers forcibly dragging some people from their homes to make arrests.

This clip has been claimed to show Mumbai police taking strict action against those accused in the Mira Road riots.

Fact Crescendo received this video with fact-check requests on our WhatsApp Tipline (9049053770).

We found out that the viral video is actually from Hyderabad and dates back to 2022. It has no link to the recent incident in Mira Road.

WHAT’S THE CLAIM?

In the viral video, police can be seen kicking and barging into houses, forcefully arresting men, and hitting them with sticks.

Users are sharing the video claiming – “Those who attacked Ram Yatra on 22nd in Mira Nair area of Mumbai were picked up from their home today. Much respect! Now there is a reward for breaking the backyard!”

FACT-CHECK

Upon careful inspection, we noted that there is a board on the wall that reads – 'Shaffaf.'

A Google search revealed that Shaffaf is a packaged drinking water company situated in Shalibanda, Hyderabad.

Also, the registration number of one of the police cars in the video begins with 'TS.' This particular code indicates that the vehicle is registered in Telangana State.

Using Google Maps, we tracked down the exact location of the 'Shaffaf' shop in Hyderabad city.

We also identified inscriptions in Urdu on another building featured in the footage. We successfully located the same building on Google Maps in Hyderabad.

Hence, it is clear that the viral video is not from Mumbai. It is from Hyderabad.

What was the incident?

According to news reports, BJP leader T. Raja Singh was arrested by the Hyderabad police on 23 August 2022 over alleged remarks he made against Islam and Prophet Muhammad. However, he was granted bail the next day.

Following his release, protesters in large numbers gathered in Shahalibanda and Charminar areas during the morning hours. Incidents of violence were reported during these protests, leading the police to detain several young men whom they suspected of being involved in the protest.

CONCLUSION

Hence, it is concluded that the viral video is falsely claimed to be from Mumbai. In reality, the video of police forcefully arresting people is from Hyderabad and dates back to 2022.

On Wednesday, the Mira Bhayandar Vasai Vihar Police issued a notice urging social media administrators not to forward or share any jokes or videos concerning the clashes during the Ram Temple Pran Pratishtha. The note stated that the police would take action against group administrators who violate this directive.
