Old video from Turkey shared as recent visuals from Japan earthquake.

Viral video is from an earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria on February 2023.

7.5 magnitude earthquake struck central Japan on 1 January 2024 afternoon, collapsing buildings, causing fires and triggering tsunami alerts as far away as eastern Russia, prompting orders for residents to evacuate affected coastal areas of Japan. The quake triggered waves of about 1m along Japan’s west coast and neighbouring South Korea with authorities saying larger waves could follow.

Amid this, a video that shows inside of a hospital with few panicked nurses running to save a child during an earthquake has gone viral on social media claiming to be from the recent Earthquake in the Japan. Caption of the video states, “Watch as a 7.6 magnitude earthquake on a Richter scale hits a hospital in Japan sending the nurses In a panic. Keep the people of Japan safe and in your prayers”.

Fact Check-

We conducted a reverse image search on Google with the key frames of the viral video to find the original source. As a result, we found the same Youtube video was featured in TRT Channel captioned it as “Nurse rushes to rescue children as massive earthquake hits”.

The description states, “A nurse risks her life to rescue children as an earthquake violently rattles the hospital she works at in Türkiye’s Gaziantep. Nurse Seyma Alakus reportedly lost her relatives in Hatay province during earthquakes that have impacted 10 of Türkiye’s provinces and left tens of thousands dead”.

In further search, we came across another Youtube video also titled “CCTV footage shows a nurse running to save children as earthquake hits Turkey”. It also mentions that “Seyma Alakus, a nurse at Inayet Topcuoglu Hospital in Gaziantep province, ran to save as many children as possible as soon as the earthquake was felt in the building. Gaziantep is one of the cities severely affected by two powerful earthquakes in southern Turkey. The death toll has reached over 31,000 with around 90,000 injured people”.

As per reports, nurses at a special care baby unit in a Gaziantep hospital in Turkey who put their own lives at risk during the disaster to protect their patients. The video shows the CCTV footages of a nurse trying to rescue children at a hospital are from Gaziantep, a city in south-central Turkey, where an earthquake was reported in February 2023.

It confirms that the video is not related to the recent earthquakes that struck Japan.

On 6 February 2023 a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck southern and central Turkey and northern and western Syria. The epicenter was 37 km (23 mi) west–northwest of Gaziantep. There was widespread damage and tens of thousands of fatalities.

Conclusion

Fact Crescendo found the claim made along with the viral video to be False. The viral video is not from the earthquake that hit Japan on 1 January 2024, but from an earthquake that occurred in Turkey and Syria on February 2023. The footage is taken from a hospital in Turkey.
