Is this an image of a recent military vehicle accident in Ladakh? Know the truth

A tragic accident of a military vehicle in Ladakh took the precious lives of a Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) and 8 soldiers. This accident took place in the Nyoma region of Ladakh when a military vehicle skidded off the road and fell into a deep valley. 

In the backdrop of this, an image of a damaged military vehicle is going viral on social media. It was claimed that this is an image of the recent accident that happened in Ladakh. 

However, Fact Crescendo found the claim to be misleading. This is not an image of the recent accident in Ladakh, but an old image from Sikkim. 

What’s the claim? 

Sharing the image, social media users are claiming that this is an image of a recent accident of a military vehicle in Ladakh. This happened in Kyari town and 9 soldiers lost their lives. The troops were moving from Karu garrison to Kyari near Leh.

Fact Check- 

A Google Reverse Image Search on the viral image led us to the Hindustan Times report published on 23 December 2022. According to the report, this incident took place in North Sikkim. 16 soldiers lost their lives in this accident. The truck carrying soldiers was moving from Chatten towards Thangu. The truck skidded down a steep slope and fell into a gorge. 

The same visual of the accident can also be seen on The Economic Times YouTube channel. On 23 December The Economic Times reported that on the same day an army vehicle met with an accident in Zema in North Sikkim. 16 soldiers lost their lives in this accident. A 3-vehicle convoy was moving from Chatten to Thangu when one of the vehicles skidded on a steep slope while taking a sharp turn. A rescue operation was carried out and 4 soldiers were evacuated

Army vehicle accident in Leh

According to India Today, 9 soldiers lost their lives when the vehicle carrying them skidded off the road and fell into a deep gorge. One JCO and eight soldiers were killed in this tragic accident that happened on 19 August near Kyari town in Leh. 

Conclusion: 

Fact Crescendo found the claim to be misleading. Although it is true that a tragic accident of an army vehicle took place in Leh but the image getting viral is not of the same incident. The viral image is from Sikkim last year.
