Is this a video showing an ad against BJP ahead of Karnataka Elections? Know the truth
The viral video has been edited and was not a campaign video urging people not to vote for the BJP. CEAT Tyres uploaded the original advertisement on 8 June, 2017 which has nothing to do with the Karnataka elections.
Karnataka's assembly election has been scheduled for 10May, 2023, in a single phase, with the vote counting on May 13. The major political parties competing in the upcoming elections are the BJP and the Congress.
In this scenario, there are several images and videos circulating on social media. Among these is a viral video depicting a man being asked to pay extra for a shopping bag, with the suggestion that it is a political campaign urging people to vote against the Bharatiya Janata Party and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
In the video we can see a scene at a shopping mall where a person purchases several items. The cashier asks him whether he require a carry bag for groceries. The shopper denies it and instead grabs the groceries with his hands, mouth and neck. The ad cuts to a text which reads, “Modi Hatao Paise Bachao, Modi Hatao Desh Bachao, Modi Hatao Beti Bacaho.” (Remove Modi Save Money, Remove Modi Save the Nation, Remove Modi Save your Daughters)
The caption of the viral post states, “Modi Hatao Desh Bacho Best Ads #KarnatakaElection2023.
The same video is also being shared on Facebook with the misleading claim.
Fact Check-
We began our investigation by watching the video carefully and found several replies on Twitter, where users pointed out that the video is from a CEAT Tyres ad and has been edited to make the false claim.
In further search, the link led us to a YouTube video named 'Savings at Supermarket - CEAT Fuelsmarrt Tyres', which was uploaded on 8 June, 2017. The video is identical to the viral video, with the exception of the disclaimer urging people not to vote for PM Modi and the BJP. The film does not include a disclaimer encouraging people not to vote for the BJP, but rather the CEAT Tyre brand logo.
The video description reads, “How often has a trip to the supermarket involved spending big on a few kilos? Every single time, right? When such is the case, any savings bring a smile! Why choose to save just a few coins when you can save much more to cover your grocery bills? With CEAT Fuelsmarrt tyres, you'll always be covered! #SaveBigNotSmall.”
We also found the same advertisement by CEAT Tyres has been uploaded by other users on YouTube as well.
Both videos are 37 seconds long and at the end of the ad, there is no tagline saying "Modi Hatao" as in the viral video. The original advertisement contains a call to action for consumers to buy CEAT tyres to save money.
