A graphic poster is circulating on social media claiming that all Cadbury Dairy Milk products are manufactured using beef. Sharing this poster, users are claiming that Cadbury Dairy Milk itself has agreed that its products contain beef and that all their products are Halal certified.

It was mentioned in the poster that Cadbury company itself agreed that if any of their products contain gelatin in the ingredients then it is derived from beef and that gelatin is halal certified.

The caption of the viral post read, “Jains never take ONIONS but they take Cadbury chocolates which contain gelatin made from cow beef. We must stop taking all Cadbury products.

Fact Check-

We noticed that the image of the poster also had a website (https://www.cadbury.com.au/). We found that it is Cadbury's website in Australia. According to the address given on the website, this company is located in Melbourne, Australia.

After looking at the website, we found that it was mentioned clearly, ‘If any of the Australian products contain gelatin in the ingredients, the gelatin we use is halal certified and derived from beef.’ From this, it is clear that the above information from the Australian website was taken and shared falsely in connection to Cadbury products in the Indian market.

Further, Fact Crescendo contacted Mondelez India’s spokesperson Rakhi Bansal. She told us that “All the products manufactured and sold in India are 100% vegetarian. The green dot on the wrapper is its proof. As you can imagine, negative posts like this damage consumer trust in our respected and loved brands. We request our consumers to kindly verify the facts related to our products before sharing them further.”

We also found that Cadbury Dairy Milk had replied to a tweet from a user saying, “The screenshot shared in the Tweet is not related to Mondelez products manufactured in India. All the products manufactured and sold in India are 100% vegetarian. The green dot on the wrapper signifies that.As you can well imagine, negative posts like these, damages consumer confidence in our well-respected and loved brands. We request our consumers to please verify facts related to our products before sharing them further.”

In another tweet, Cadbury clarified that the screenshot circulating on social media is not related to Mondelez products manufactured in India.

In addition, we found a clarification given by Cadbury Dairy Milk on their Twitter account, where it is mentioned that all Cadbury India products are listed as vegetarian.

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) uses different colored dots to indicate whether a product is vegetarian, non-vegetarian or contains eggs. The FSSAI website states that for all vegetarian foods, there will be a green dot marked on the wrapper of the food products.

Below you can see a pack of Cadbury Dairy Milk Chocolates available for sale on Amazon India. It has a green dot as mandated by FSSAI.

What is Halal Product?

Halal is derived from the Arabic words halla, yahillu, hilan, and wahlalan, meaning permitted or permissible by Islamic Shari'a law. When a food or item is described as halal that food or item can be consumed or used by a Muslim. This means:

  1. Nothing is impure / 'Najis' according to Islamic Shari'a law and fatwas
  2. It does not include any part of human being or its produce which is not permitted by Islamic Shari'a law and fatwa
  3. Food products should not contain anything impure or najis which can be divided into three categories:
    1. (Grievous) such as dogs, pigs and their descendants or born from any one of them
    2. (Moderate) which is with the exception of the above two, such as blood, pus, feces and etc.
    3. (Mild) i.e. the urine of a child who is fully breastfed and has not reached the age of two years.

Conclusion:

Fact Crescendo found that the claim made through the graphic poster is false. Cadbury Dairy Milk manufactured by Mondelez India Foods Pvt Ltd in India is completely vegetarian. It does not contain beef. The viral graphic poster was taken from Australia’s Cadbury’s website.
