Fact Check-
A Google Reverse Image Search on a keyframe led us to the same video uploaded on YouTube in 2019. Hence, it is not a recent incident. The same video has been circulating on social media since 2019.
We found that Luppo is a brand of cake manufactured by a Turkish company, Solen. A Turkish fact checking organization, Teyit, had pointed out that at the timestamp of 45 seconds, the person in the video can be heard speaking Sorani language which is a dialect of Kurdish and the official language of the official language of the Kurdistan Regional Government in Iraq.
After this video went viral in 2019, Erbil Health Protection Affairs Directorate in Iraq posted two images of authorities inspecting Luppo cake’s packets on Facebook. The Facebook post reads, “Dear Citizens, according to the laboratory tests of the Food Centre-Ebril, Luppo cake is edible. Earlier, Health Minister Dr. Samaan Barzanji ordered the testing. Sarhang Jalal, director of health protection affairs in Erbil, stressed that the sample of the cake has been tested in the laboratory and is edible.”
Further, we also found that Solen was certified with AA+ grade, which is considered as highest grade in terms of food safety and production infrastructure. According to Solen’s website, it implements the ISO 22000, BRCGS, and IFS standards at the highest level in its facilities within the scope of Global Food Safety management and is certified at AA+ and High Level levels through unannounced inspections.
Solen also certified by another food safety governing body SGS. Below you can see the certificate.
Apart from this, we also found that at the 17 second timestamp of the viral video, the piece of cake moves out of the focus of camera. This raises doubt whether the tablets coming out of the cake is from the cake that was opened in the video. We also found holes in the cake piece and if you will closely look at the video, the tablet pieces came around that hole portion. Below you can see the image.
Conclusion:
Fact Crescendo found that the cake piece taken out of the packet has been tampered and tablets were added to it later. Luppo cake manufacturer Solen has been certified for its facilities and manufacturing process and has been declared as safe to consume.
