An old video of T20 World Cup victory parade in Mumbai goes viral with misleading claims

On 23 September 2024, a large gathering of Muslim community members marched through Mumbai’s streets, led by former AIMIM MP Imtiaz Jaleel. They demanded action against BJP MLA Nitesh Rane and preacher Ramgiri Maharaj, accusing them of making hate statements. The rally attracted more than 12,000 attendees.

Against this backdrop, a video is going viral on social media in which a huge crowd of people can be seen on a road. This appears to be the Marine Drive area of ​​Mumbai. The users who share the video claims that it shows the rally organised by AIMIM on 23 September.

Fact Check- 

We started our investigation by conducting a reverse image search on Google and the results led us to a similar video uploaded on Twitter on 4 July 2024. According to the information given in the post, this video is from Marine Drive in Mumbai when a large number of people had gathered there to welcome the Indian cricket team. This makes one thing clear that this video is not recent and not associated with AIMIM Mumbai rally.

Moving forward, we found several similar videos showing massive crowd gathered to welcome the India cricket team at Marine Drive in Mumbai. The Print published a similar video on YouTube on 4 July with a caption “Cricket fans throng Mumbai’s Marine Drive to witness India’s victory parade.” 

Using this hint, we searched more and found many media reports related to this. News 18 Marathi and Channel 5 Tamil shared similar visuals. Thousands of people gathered to welcome the parade, which travelled from Marine Drive to Wankhede Stadium in an open-top bus.

So, it is clear that the viral video is not of the protest rally held in Mumbai, but of the T20 World Cup victory parade held in Mumbai in July 2024.

Conclusion- 

Fact crescendo found the claim made along with the viral video to be Misleading. This video is not recent, and it shows the victory parade of the Indian cricket team held on Marine Drive in Mumbai on 4 July.
