Rahul Gandhi’s image with Columnist Amulya Gopalakrishnan goes viral with misleading claims

The viral image does not show Rahul Gandhi with Amrit Singh, director of Open Society founded by George Soros

An image of a man with a backpack with his back to the camera, and a woman clutching her luggage gazing sideways, with Rahul Gandhi standing in the corner, is becoming viral on social media. The image looks to be outside an airport, with people carrying luggage, including trolley bags. Additionally, an inset photograph of Amrit Singh can be seen.

The users who shared the image claims that Rahul Gandhi was photographed with Amrit Singh, who previously worked with George Soros backed Open Society Justice Initiative.

Fact Check-

A reverse image search of the image led us to a Tweet of Congress’s Social media chairperson Supriya Shrinate, dismissing the viral claim and posted two images from the same location stating that the woman in the viral image is Amulya Gopalakrishnan, with her husband Amitabh Dubey who were travelling with Rahul Gandhi.

Moving forward, we found a YouTube video by the Oneindia News uploaded on 27 October, 2023 states that Rahul Gandhi was returning from an impromptu visit to Uzbekistan. It also says that the woman next to him is wife of Rahul Gandhi’s childhood friend and top Congress leader Amitabh Dubey.

Amulya Gopalakrishnan is columnist for The Indian Express, Times of India and The Economic Times. Amitabh Dubey is in-charge of research & monitoring the communications department of Congress. He is a member of the Congress’s 2024 manifesto committee. We also found a TOI news report of Rahul Gandhi attending their wedding back in January 2011.

Who is Amrit Singh?

Former Prime Minister Manmohan Sigh’s daughter, Amrit Singh, worked in the Accountability Division at the Open Society Justice Initiative, where she led projects on various rule of law and human rights issues, according to her profile on Stanford Law School’s website.

Conclusion-

Fact Crescendo found the claim made along with the viral image to be False. The person in the viral image with Rahul Gandhi is not Amrit Singh. She is columnist Amulya Gopalakrishnan, wife of Rahul Gandhi’s childhood friend and top Congress leader Amitabh Dubey.
