Old and unrelated video shared as recent protest against SIR in West Bengal

This is an old video from Bangladesh’s Faridpur district, which dates back to September 2025

On 27 October, 2025, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar announced that Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls will be conducted in 12 States and Union Territories, including West Bengal. The Special Intensive Revision is a process by the Election Commission of India that involves a comprehensive review of voter rolls, including a detailed check at the local level to ensure the accuracy of the lists. Following the announcement of SIR in West Bengal, many illegal Bangladeshi migrants were arrested trying to cross the border out of India.

Against this backdrop, a video purporting to show footage of a protest against the SIR in West Bengal is going viral on social media. In the video we can see a crowd walking with sticks and brooms in their hands on the streets. The caption of the post states, “See how they have come out against SIR (Special Intensive Revision of Voters’ List in West Bengal. Illegal Bangladeshis and Rohingyas must be deported”.

Fact Check- 

We started our investigation with a reverse image search on Google with the key frames of the video and we found that this video is old. SIR started in West Bengal from 4 November 2025. The Election Commission announced SIR in October 2025. But this video is available on the internet from 15 September 2025. We can see below that this video was published on TikTok.

Moving forward, we also found this video on Facebook. This video was uploaded by a Bangladeshi user on 15 September, 2025. According to the caption of the post, the footage is from a protest in Faridpur, Bangladesh.

Another post on TikTok also claims that these images are from a protest rally organized in Faridpur, Bangladesh.

Taking account of the evidences, it is clear that this is an old footage and it has no link to SIR protest. The video predates the announcement of the SIR in West Bengal.   

Conclusion- 

Fact crescendo found the claim made along with the viral video to be Misleading. This is an old video from Bangladesh’s Faridpur district, which dates back to September 2025.
