Old Unrelated Video Shared Linking To Zohran Mamdani’s Victory.

Recently, Zohran Mamdani became the first Muslim mayor of New York. Against this backdrop, a video of a man removing the American flag from a lightpost went viral on social media. Sharing the video, users claimed that the video shows a Muslim man removing the American flag after Johran Mamdani’s win. 

A user wrote, “Source: chavankepradosh 

🇺🇸🚨 Dark times for New York? After Zohran Mamdani’s victory as Mayor, shocking visuals emerge 📍Muslims tearing down American flags 👏 Crowd cheering as if celebrating conquest! Is this the beginning of Sharia Law in New York? Or the end of America’s identity itself?”

However, as we investigated, we came to know that the claim was false. The viral video is old and unrelated to Zohran Mamdani’s win. Here’s the fact check. 

Fact Check 

We started our investigation by taking screenshots from the viral video and conducting a reverse image search. This led us to a report published on 11 November 2023 that contained a longer version of the viral video. According to the report, the video shows a pro-Palestinian protester tearing down U.S flags in New York City. The New York City police arrested the person.

Conclusion 

From our investigation, we can say that the claim is false. The viral video doesn’t show an incident after Zohran Mamdani’s win. The video shows a pro-Palestinian protest in November 2023.
