This is an old video from Turkey and it has no link to Karnataka
A video of a person removing garbage from an underground garbage bin is going viral on social media with a claim that it shows an experimental system that was started in Karnataka’s Belagavi( Belgaum). The caption of the post states, “Nice concept initiated in Bharat. By Belgaum BJP MLa, underground hydraulic dustbin of 1 tonne capacity. Once 75 % garbage is collected, there will be automatic intimation to the sanitation dept. If garbage is not collected even after 100 % full, there will be PUNITIVE action against the concerned team”.
Let’s check the truth
Fact Check-
We started our investigation with the reverse image search on Google and the results led us to a similar video uploaded on Turkish channel in August, 2013 under the caption “Rear Loader Refuse Truck with Crane for Underground Container.” The description part states that Hidro-Mak was a Turkish company that made garbage compactors. In that video, identical scenes of garbage being lifted from an underground bin into a truck can be seen.
By closely analysing the video, we found that the number plate of the truck is 34 EF 4247, the number plates that begin with 34 are from Istanbul, Turkey. We also spotted the words “Üsküdar Belediyesi” written on the truck, which is a municipality in Istanbul.
Though the viral video is old and unrelated to Belagavi, the concept of underground hydraulic dustbins is genuine and operational in Karnataka. As per reports from 2022 18 such high-tech dustbins were installed across Belagavi South constituency at a cost of ₹1.56 crore under the MLA’s development grant. Each bin, equipped with sensors, costs ₹6.5 lakh, and a dedicated vehicle worth ₹80 lakh has been deployed for garbage collection. Another report of AllAboutBelgaum states that MLA Abhay Patil inaugurated what he described as India’s first underground dustbin with sensors at Sri Basaveshwara Circle. These dustbins have been functional for two years and are planned to expand into Belagavi North soon.
So, based on these evidences, we can understand that this is an old video from Turkey, not from Karnataka.
Conclusion-
Fact Crescendo found the claim made along with the video to be Misleading. This is an old video from Turkey and it has no link to Karnataka.
