Old video of Rahul Gandhi with Amitabh Bachchan goes viral with misleading claims

This viral video shows Amitabh Bachchan with Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi at Delhi Airport after the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi in May 1991.

A video of young Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi with actor Amitabh Bachchan is going viral on social media with the claim that it depicts an old footage in which Bachchan had to go bring Rahul Gandhi back from the USA when he was arrested in a drug related case, but was released on the request of then-Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Fact Check- 

We ran a keyword search to see if Congress leader Rahul Gandhi had ever been arrested in a drug case in the United States or elsewhere. But we could not find any credible reports supporting the viral claim. If Rahul Gandhi had been caught in such a narcotics case, both national and international media outlets would have covered it extensively.

Next, we conducted a reverse image search with the key frames of the video and the results led us to a video uploaded on the stock image website Getty, which featured the same visuals as the viral video. According to the description of the Getty video, it shows Amitabh Bachchan with Rahul Gandhi at Delhi Airport following the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi in May 1991.

As per reports, Amitabh Bachchan was in London at the time of Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination in Sriperumbudur in May 1991, and Rahul Gandhi was in Boston, USA. Both arrived at Delhi Airport at about the same time. It should also be mentioned that Chandra Shekhar was India’s Prime Minister at the time of Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination.

Moving forward, we also found another video of Amitabh Bachchan with Rahul- Priyanka Gandhi at Delhi airport from May 1991 that was posted by Wilderness Films India on YouTube.

Based on these evidences, we can understand that an old video of Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi and Amitabh Bachchan is being shared to falsely claim that it shows Rahul Gandhi arriving in India after being detained on drug charges.
