Recently a video of a torch rally went viral on social media claiming it to be a procession demanding justice for renowned singer Zubeen Garg, who passed away in Singapore on 19 September 2025. It is worth mentioning that after the death of Zubeen Garg, a Special Investigation Team is investigating the matter.

However, as we investigated, we came to know that the viral video was misleading. The video is not related to Zubeen Garg. Here’s the fact check.

Fact Check

At the beginning of our investigation, we tried to understand the slogans in the viral video. We could hear the slogans in Assamese “Morileo mori jam, jonojati loi jam”, which translates into “It doesn’t matter if we die, we will take the ST status”.

This indicates that the video is related to a rally demanding the ST status.

Moving forward, a reverse image search of the screenshots from the viral video led us to a Facebook post on 19 September 2025 that contained the viral video.

According to the Assamese caption of the post, the video shows a torch rally by the Matak community demanding the ST status. Around 50000 people attended the rally in Tinsukia, Assam on 19 September 2025.

We found the same video uploaded on the Facebook page of Tinsukia Jila Matak Yuva Chatro Sanmilan on 19 September 2025.

We found the same video on an Instagram handle on 19 September 2025, which mentioned the video as a torch rally by the Matak community in Tinsukia demanding the ST status.

After the news of Zubeen Garg’s death on 19 September 2025, the Matak community started the torch rally by paying tribute to him.

A news report can be read here.

For more information, we contacted Kiran Rajkhowa, General Secretary, All Assam Matak Sanmilan. He said that the video is from the Torch Rally organised in Tinsukia on 19 September 2025. After the sudden demise of the renowned singer Zubeen Garg, they paid tribute to him, and after that, they started their Torch Rally organised demanding the ST status. They couldn’t cancel the rally as everything had been planned earlier.

This makes it clear that the viral video shows a torch rally organised by the Matak community demanding the ST status.

Conclusion

From our investigation, we can say that the claim is misleading. The viral video doesn’t show a rally demanding justice for Zubeen Garg. The rally was organised in Tinsukia by the Matak community demanding the ST status.
