Old image of Sonam Wangchuk with Muhammad Yunus goes viral with misleading claims after Ladakh violence

This viral image of Sonam Wangchuk with Muhammad Yunus is from 2020, not recent.

On 24 September, 2025, massive violence broke out in Leh during protests demanding statehood for Ladakh and inclusion in the Sixth Schedule. Four people were killed and more than 70 injured. Authorities have accused Sonam Wangchuk of inciting the unrest. An FIR was filed and he was later arrested, bringing his activities under scrutiny. Amidst this, an image of social activist Sonam Wangchuk with Bangladesh’s interim Chief Advisor, Muhammad Yunus, is going viral on social media with the claim that the two met recently amid the recent violence in Ladakh.

In the image, Wangchuk can be seen hugging Bangladesh’s interim Chief Advisor, Mohammad Yunus, it is being shared as a recent meeting, linking it to the Ladakh violence.

Fact Check- 

We started the investigation with a reverse image search on Google and the results led us to same image shared on Sonam Wangchuk’s official Instagram account on 8 February, 2020. According to his caption, the picture was taken during an event at the British High Commission in Dhaka, where Wangchuk met Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus.

Moving forward, we found that the same image was shared on Sonam Wangchuk’s official Facebook account also in the year 2020.

In 2020, Muhammad Yunus was only an economist and a Nobel Laureate with no political responsibilities. Sheikh Hasina was the government in Bangladesh in 2020. Yunus became the chief advisor of Bangladesh’s interim government in August 2024 following the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government. 

Based on these evidences, we can understand that the viral image of Ladakhi activist Sonam Wangchuk and Bangladeshi economist and head of the country’s interim government Muhammad Yunus was not recent it was from the year 2020.
