However, as we investigated, we learned that the claim was misleading. The viral video does not show a rally against Bangladeshis. Here’s the fact check.

Fact Check

We started our investigation by taking screenshots from the viral video and conducting a reverse image search. This led us to a report published in India Today NE on 6 September 2025 that contained a similar video.

The report read, “Thousands of members of the Moran community took to the streets of Margherita on Saturday, September 6 in a massive protest rally, reiterating their long-standing demand for inclusion in the Scheduled Tribes (ST) list and the granting of autonomy under the Sixth Schedule.

The rally was spearheaded by the All Moran Students’ Union (AMSU), led by president Pulindra Moran and general secretary Jaykanta Moran, and saw participation from various Moran community-based organizations. Demonstrators marched through the main road of Margherita, voicing their dissatisfaction with what they described as decades of government neglect and deception.

Speakers at the rally asserted that the Moran community has been historically deprived of constitutional safeguards and stressed that Scheduled Tribe recognition is essential for preserving their identity, culture, and development rights. They further emphasized that Sixth Schedule autonomy would empower the community with greater self-governance and control over their socio-economic affairs.

The protestors pledged to continue their agitation until the government takes concrete steps toward fulfilling their demands.”

Using relevant keywords, we found a report published in The Assam Tribune on 11 September 2025. The report contained an image similar to the screenshots from the viral video. The report read, ‘ Tinsukia district witnessed a massive uproar on Wednesday evening, as nearly 20,000 members of the Moran community took to the streets demanding Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.

The agitation, spearheaded by the All Moran Students’ Union (AMSU), followed a series of protests in Talap, Kakopathar, and Margherita. The movement culminated in Tinsukia town with a mammoth rally that shook the streets ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled visit to Assam on September 13.

With heavy security deployed across the town, the procession began from the Borguri Industrial Training Institute playground and saw huge participation from both men and women of the community…”

According to the caption, the people in Margherita took to the streets in a massive protest rally against the government for not fulfilling their long-standing demand for inclusion of the Moran community in the Scheduled Tribe.

Other reports can be seen here and here.

We contacted the Vice President of the All Moran Students Union, Abhijit Chetia, for more information. He said that they started protest rallies reiterating their long-standing demand for inclusion in the Scheduled Tribes (ST) list and the granting of autonomy under the Sixth Schedule. “We do not support the illegal Bangladeshis but this protest has nothing to do with the Bangladeshi issue.”, he added.

This makes it clear that the viral clip shows the Moran community’s protest over the ST status.

Conclusion

From our investigation, we can say that the claim is misleading. The viral video doesn’t show a protest by the citizens of Assam against the Bangladeshis and in support of the Assam Government’s Mass Eviction Drive.  The video shows a protest by the Moran community in Margherita, Assam, demanding the inclusion of the Moran community in the Scheduled Tribe.
