Old Unrelated Video Of Pashupatinath Temple Going Viral Linking To The Recent Anti-Government Protests In Nepal.

A video allegedly showing an attack on the Pashupatinath Temple in Nepal went viral on social media with the claim that during the recent anti-government protests, protesters attacked the temple.

However, as we investigated, we came to know that the claim was false. The viral video is old and unrelated to the recent protests in Nepal. Here’s the fact check.

Fact Check 

We started our investigation by taking screenshots from the viral video and conducting a reverse image search. This led us to a Facebook post where a video was uploaded on 21 March 2025. We noticed a similar clip to the viral video. But the people shown in the video were different. 

The translation of the Nepali caption reads, “Invitation Invitation Invitation

Since the Pahan Chahre (Horse Festival) is being held from 15th, 16th and 17th of Chaitra, 2081, we cordially invite all the residents of the ward to attend and participate in a dignified and grand manner.”

We found a video similar to the viral one on a Facebook page “Hamro Jatra” uploaded on 14 July 2025. 

The translation of the Nepali caption reads, “Who knows about this procession held at Pashupatinath Temple?

Which procession and when is it held?

Why are you climbing on the door?”

The anti-government protests in Nepal started on 8 September 2025. This makes it clear that the viral video predates the recent protests in Nepal.

On the same Facebook page (Hamro Jatra) we found a post on 9 September 2025 sharing the viral video. The translation of the Nepali caption reads,”This video is not of today or now, not of agitation, but of fair.

This video/photo is of our ‘Paha Chahre Jatra’, which is an important festival of the Newar community. There has been no attacks or unpleasant incidents in this and everyone is safe.

This video/photo is a simple scene captured during the festival. So, no one needs to be scared or terrorized about it. I also request you not to be confused and not to spread confusion.”

We contacted the page to know more about the incident. They replied that the video doesn’t show any protest. It was a festival held on 31 March 2025.

This makes it clear that the viral video is old and unrelated to the recent protests in Nepal.

Conclusion 

From our investigation, we can say that the claim is false. The viral video doesn’t show an attack on the Pashupatinath Temple in Nepal during the recent anti-government protests. The video shows a festival held on 31 March 2025 in the Pashupatinath Temple.
