Scripted video goes viral as a real incident of violence against Dalit policeman in UP

A video of a few individuals harassing a uniformed police officer is going viral on social media. The video claims to be from Uttar Pradesh, and it shows a police officer getting beaten up by members of a Brahmin family because he is a Dalit, with the caption: “The officer in uniform is a Dalit. Even if a Dalit comes in uniform, this is what happens in Uttar Pradesh. The users who share the video claims that it is a real incident.

Fact Check- 

We started our investigation by conducting a reverse image search on Google and the results led us to a similar video uploaded on the YouTube channel CWE on 18 June, 2019. The scripted video is given with the caption, “Singham dubey interrupt shastri while doing puja”. The video starts with the caption ‘Great Breakdown Show’ The viral video uses a mirror version of the 2.43-minute video starting at 1.51 minutes.

When we conducted further searches about the YouTube channel that shared the video, we found that CWE (Continental Wrestling Entertainment) India is a verified YouTube channel. The channel is owned by famous wrestler Dilip Singh Rana, also known as ‘The Great Khali’. Continental Wrestling Entertainment (CWE), a professional wrestling promotion and training school launched by Indian WWE champion The Great Khali in Jalandhar in Punjab.

CWE aims to develop and promote professional wrestling talent within India, providing training with world-class facilities and a platform for aspiring wrestlers to compete globally.

Upon further search, we found that ‘Singam Dubey’ is just a character on the channel.   Many other  videos featuring Singham Dubey in the role of a police officer  have also been shared on the channel. Other characters, including the priest in the viral video, can also be seen in various videos.

According to the website, CWE is India’s first professional wrestling promotion and training academy. The academy was established on January 20, 2015. CWE aims to attract the younger generation to the professional wrestling scene and provide them with a platform to perform at the world level. More details about the academy can be found here.

So, based on these evidences, we can understand that the video circulating showing a Dalit policeman being beaten up is a scripted video uploaded around 6 years ago on a YouTube channel.

Conclusion- Fact crescendo found the claim made along with the viral video to be False. This video does not show a real incident. It is a scripted video.
