Clipped and edited videos are being used to spread misinformation ahead of the upcoming Bihar elections.
A short video of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is going viral with the claim that he said during a speech that he called Prime Minister Narendra Modi and asked him to withdraw from the India-Pakistan war.
Believing this to be true, many users are accusing Rahul Gandhi of supporting Pakistan and questioning his intentions.
Fact Crescendo received several requests from readers on our WhatsApp Helpline (9049053770) to verify this claim.
After checking, we found that the viral video does not show the full statement. It has been edited to remove the part where Rahul Gandhi mentions that the U.S. President Donald Trump allegedly called PM Modi to de-escalate the India-Pakistan conflict.
WHAT’S THE CLAIM?
In the viral clip, Rahul Gandhi can be heard saying, “When war broke out between India and Pakistan, I called Modi and told him to stop within 24 hours.”
Many social media users felt that the informal tone was disrespectful and inappropriate when addressing the country’s Prime Minister.
FACT-CHECK
Using relevant keywords, we found the original video on the official Congress YouTube channel, uploaded on 27 August 2025.
Rahul Gandhi was addressing a rally in Muzaffarpur, Bihar, during his Voter Adhikar Yatra. The full speech text is also available on the official Congress website.
In the complete speech, Rahul Gandhi was talking about an alleged phone call by the US President Donald Trump to PM Modi during the India-Pakistan Conflict in May.
Rahul Gandhi’s full quote was: “Trump said today – When war broke out between India and Pakistan, I [means Trump] called Modi and told him to stop within 24 hours. And Narendra Modi stopped everything not in 24 hours, but within just 5 hours.”
The viral clip removes the mention of Trump, making it appear as if Rahul Gandhi himself made the call.
What Did Trump Say?
On 26 August, Trump claimed that he spoke with Prime Minister Modi and stopped the India-Pakistan war in 5 hours by threatening to impose tariffs.
He said, “I am talking to a very terrific man, Narendra Modi. I said, ‘What’s going on with you and Pakistan?’ I said, I don’t want to make a trade deal with you. You guys are going to end up in a nuclear war. I said, call me back tomorrow. But we are not going to do any deals with you, or we are going to put tariffs on you that are so high, your head is going to spin. Within five hours, it was done. Maybe it starts again, but I will stop it if it does.”
India has repeatedly dismissed this claim, stating that the ceasefire happened through direct negotiations between the two countries, without third-party involvement. The issue of trade or tariff did not come up in any of those discussions.
CONCLUSION
The viral clip is incomplete and misleading. It removes the whole context from the original speech. This selective editing creates a misleading impression that Rahul Gandhi himself called Narendra Modi. In reality, he was referring to Donald Trump’s alleged call to Modi during the India-Pakistan conflict.
