Fact-Check

No Official Announcement from Tesla or Elon Musk

Upon our investigation, we have found no formal statements or press releases from Tesla, nor any verified posts from Elon Musk on X, confirming the development or launch of an aluminum-ion battery.

Tesla’s latest battery milestone was the production of its 100-millionth 4680 lithium-ion cell, announced in September 2024. This suggests continued investment in lithium-ion technology, not an imminent transition to aluminum-ion.

Reputable platforms like EVWorld and Telematics Wire stress that, while Tesla explores future battery tech, aluminum-ion has not been publicly confirmed as part of the company’s near-term roadmap.

Tesla’s Current Battery Strategy Focuses on Lithium-Ion

Tesla is publicly committed to improving its 4680 lithium-ion cell technology, which offers better energy density, production efficiency, and integration with the structural battery pack.

Tesla is also refining lithium extraction processes, including operations near Corpus Christi, Texas, an initiative incompatible with claims of a near-future shift to aluminum-ion technology.

As of August 2025, Tesla continues to invest heavily in lithium-ion battery technology across multiple chemistries. These batteries are currently deployed across Tesla’s vehicle lineup and remain the company’s technological backbone.

In January 2025, Nasdaq reported that Tesla secured long-term lithium supply contracts with companies like Ganfeng Lithium and Arcadium Lithium, alongside the launch of a Texas-based lithium refinery projected to produce 50 GWh of battery-grade lithium annually.

Lectron EV confirmed in February 2025 that Tesla utilizes various lithium-ion formats—18650, 2170, 4680, and LFP prismatic cells—across its vehicle models, with production partnerships from CATL, LG Energy Solutions, and Panasonic.

InsideEVs quoted Tesla’s VP of Vehicle Engineering, Lars Moravy, stating that Tesla is committed to refining existing lithium-based technologies rather than shifting to experimental alternatives like aluminum-ion.

Aluminum-Ion: A Promising but Unready Technology

It’s true that aluminum-ion batteries are being actively researched, most notably by Graphene Manufacturing Group in partnership with the University of Queensland. Lab tests suggest advantages such as charging speeds as fast as 15 minutes, energy densities up to 5,000 Wh/kg, lifespan of 10,000–15,000 cycles, and low fire risk and high recyclability.

However, significant hurdles remain for large-scale EV deployment, including scalability, manufacturing cost, and compatibility with current vehicle architectures. No company, including Tesla, has demonstrated a production-ready aluminum-ion battery suitable for electric cars. (Source)

Conclusion

Based on the available evidence, there is no credible information to support claims that Tesla is launching an aluminum-ion battery in 2025 or 2026. While aluminum-ion technology shows promise in laboratory settings, Tesla remains committed to lithium-ion battery development and production.
