US President Donald Trump recently announced that a 25 percent tariff would be imposed on goods imported from India. He warned that India would also face penalties over India’s purchase of Russian oil and weapons. Against this backdrop, a social media post attributed to External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar went viral on social media. The post reads, “🚨 🇺🇸🇮🇳 BREAKING | EAM Jaishankar :
“Our economy will not be run from the White House… Russian oil will continue to flow to India.”

However, as we investigated, we came to know that the claim was false. S Jaishankar didn’t make any such statement. Here’s the fact check.
Fact Check
We started our investigation by conducting a relevant keyword search to find out whether S Jaishankar made such a statement or not. This led us to a tweet on the official X handle of PIB Fact Check on 4 August 2025 refuting the viral claim.
We found a tweet on the X handle “MEA FactCheck“, the official fact-check account of the Ministry of External Affairs, on 3 August 2025. According to the tweet, the viral post is fake.
This makes it clear that the viral claim is false.
Conclusion
From our investigation, we can say that the claim is false. India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar didn’t say that India’s economy will not be run from the White House and Russian oil will continue to flow to India. Ministry of External Affairs and PIB Fact Check refuted the viral claim.
