The old incident of a dead woman’s body being dismembered and stuffed into a bag in Odisha shared as recent one

A photo is currently going viral on social media in which two men are seen trying to dismember a woman’s body in a hospital. A post has been shared claiming that this is an incident that happened in Odisha. 

However, Fact Crescendo found the claim to be shared without proper context. This is an old incident from Odisha which is being shared as a recent one.

What’s the claim? 

The claim states that this is a recent incident of the dead body of a woman being dismembered and put in a sack so that the father and son can easily carry the dead body on their shoulders to their village because the hospital does not have an ambulance.

Fact Check- 

A Google Reverse Image Search led us to the same image tweeted in 2020. The caption reads, “Modiji wants to build such a self-reliant India that due to not getting any government facilities, the son is carrying his mother’s dead body with broken arms and legs, stuffing it in a bag and carrying it. This incident is being reported from Odisha.“

We found the same photo published on the Jansatta website on 26 August 2016. According to reports, in 2016, an elderly woman died after being hit by a train near Soro railway station in Odisha. Due to the lack of ambulance services and proper facilities at the local hospital, her body had to be taken to the Balasore District Hospital, about 30 km away, for postmortem. The staff broke her back and leg bones to wrap her in a sheet and tied her to a bamboo pole. They then carried her body for about 2 km to the railway station and sent it by train. The incident sparked public outrage, with her son expressing deep grief over the disrespect to his mother.
