Image of 15-year-old Brazilian murder case goes viral as ‘Muslim partner kills Hindu woman in Assam’

A disturbing photograph showing a naked body inside a freezer is circulating widely on social media. Along with the image, users are claiming that it shows a Hindu woman from Assam who was allegedly gang-raped by her Muslim live-in partner and his friends, and then killed by being locked in a freezer.

Fact Crescendo received several requests to verify this photo through its WhatsApp Tipline (9049053770).

Many users shared the photo with this claim in the caption – “Story of Kajal, Share this to every hindu girl… Kajal A proud feminist, live-in supporter and secularism icon, left her parents to live “freely” with Muhammad Sabir Miyan. Firstly they were enjoying a lot then Sabir got bored of Kajal. Then he called his 7 friends, they gang raped her. Torn apart. Put alive in a freezer. Killed by cold. And even after death, they raped her dead body for 7 days. Yes, this horror happened in Assam.”

Fact-Check

A reverse image search revealed that the viral photo has been available on the internet since 2010.

The photo was published on 8 February 2010 by a website called Documenting Realty. According to the information provided with the photo, the incident took place in Greater São Paulo, Brazil. A man was arrested for murdering his wife and keeping her body in a freezer.

A blog called ‘Noticias de Itabuna’ reported on the above incident in Brazil, showing the viral photo along with other photos of the body.

Old claims; Refutation of Assam Police

In 2022, the shocking case of Shraddha Walker’s murder by her live-in partner Aftab Amin Poonawalla made headlines after he kept her body parts in a fridge. You can read more about that case here.

Around the same time, a claim went viral on social media saying that in Assam, a woman named Kajal was gang-raped by her Muslim live-in partner and his friends, and then frozen to death.

On 8 December 2022, Assam Police clarified on Twitter that this claim is completely false and that no such incident took place in the state.
