Old Unrelated Videos Shared As The Recent Earthquake In Alaska.

A significant 7.3 magnitude earthquake hit the coast of Alaska on 16 July 2025, triggering a tsunami warning. Against this backdrop, a video containing several clips of earthquakes went viral on social media claiming it to be the recent earthquake in Alaska.

However, as we investigated, we came to know that the clips are old and unrelated to the recent earthquake in Alaska. Here’s the fact check.

Fact Check

The video contains 9 different earthquake clips. We started our investigation by taking screenshots from each clip and conducting a reverse image search.

First Clip

A reverse image search of the first clip led us to a Facebook post on 19 November 2024 where we found the first clip. According to the post, the clips in the video are from the Taiwan earthquake.

Moving forward, using relevant keywords, we found a longer version of the video uploaded on a website called setn.com with a caption, “He is doing the teaching activities of the Zuoxi Mountaineering Association. Halfway up the mountain, there was a massive earthquake. Not only were the mountains and forests shaking violently but there was also a strange roar.”

According to the reports “When Zhuoxi Township Mountaineering Association was implementing a hand-made course experience on a 1000-meter mountain, it encountered a 6.8-magnitude earthquake on the Richter scale, and the instructors and students got down on the ground to evacuate”.

This makes it clear that the first clip is an old earthquake video from Taiwan.

Second Clip

The second clip shows a pond ripples like the ocean in an earthquake. A reverse image of the screenshot led us to several posts where it’s been claimed that the video is from the Myanmar-Thailand Earthquake on 28 March 2025.

Although we couldn’t find any credible news reports about the video, it predates the recent earthquake in Alaska.

Third Clip

The third clip shows a man in a swimming pool during an earthquake. A reverse image search led us to a report published in the BBC News on 3 April 2024 which contained the viral video. The report read, “A man was caught up in the Taiwan earthquake whilst swimming in a hotel rooftop pool in Taiwan’s capital city, Taipei.

The magnitude 7.4 earthquake caused widespread destruction and at least nine people have been confirmed dead.

The earthquake is the strongest recorded in Taiwan in 25 years.

A similar report can be read here

This makes it clear that this is an old clip from Taipei, Taiwan.

Fourth Clip

A reverse image search of the fourth clip led us to an Instagram post on 6 December 2024 where we found the viral clip. According to the post, the video is from California.

The video predates the recent Alaska Earthquake.

Fifth Clip

We found the third clip on a Facebook post in November 2024. According to the post, the video is from an earthquake in Taiwan.

The video predates the recent earthquake in Alaska. Although we couldn’t verify the exact time or location of the video, it’s clear that the video is old

Seventh Clip

A reverse image search of the seventh clip led us to a YouTube channel where the viral clip was uploaded on 30 April 2012.

According to the caption, the video shows the Japan Tsunami 2011.

A similar video uploaded on a YouTube channel on 26 October 2012 can be seen below. It shows the Tsunami in Japan in 2011.

Eighth Clip

A reverse image search of the eighth clip led us to a Facebook post on 14 December 2024 where the clip was uploaded. But no further information was available with the post.

However, the clip predates the recent Alaska earthquake.

We couldn’t verify the sixth and ninth clips. We will update it here whenever we get a credible source.

Conclusion

From our investigation, we can say that the claim is misleading. The clips in the viral video are not from the recent earthquake in Alaska. The video is a compilation of different clips of old earthquake incidents.
