Old video of Turkish leader being assaulted in public shared as an attack on Israeli PM Netanyahu

This video is from Turkey, and it features an attack on a Turkish political leader, not Netanyahu. 

Amidst the ongoing Israel-Iran conflict, a video showing a person being attacked in public is going viral on social media with the claim that it shows Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was assaulted by one of his own citizens.

Let’s check the truth.

Fact Check- 

By closely analysing the viral video, we noticed a watermark with the logo “2Sayfaofficial” and a search on the internet led us to an Instagram account by that name. While going through that page, we found a similar video uploaded on 4 May 2025. The caption states, “CHP President Özgür Özel was attacked at the memorial service at AKM. An investigation has been launched into the attack”. This indicates that the video predates the Israel-Iran conflict and is unrelated to it. 

Using these hints, we conducted further searches and found several news reports regarding this incident. As per reports, “Ozgur Ozel, leader of Turkey’s main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP), was attacked in Istanbul on Sunday after attending the funeral of pro-Kurdish politician Sirri Sureyya Onder. Ozel was slapped in the face after attending the funeral in Istanbul. The attacker was immediately detained and taken into custody, the opposition ANKA media outlet reported”.

A Medyanews report published on 4 May states that the man who punched Ozgur Ozel at a public event in Istanbul was identified as Selcuk Tengioglu, a convicted murderer previously jailed for killing his two children.

Taking account of all these evidences, we can understand that the viral video does not show Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu being slapped. This video is from Turkey, and it features an attack on a Turkish political leader, not Netanyahu.
