This viral audio is related to another flight and has been available online since 2009. It has no link to the Ahmedabad flight crash
The Air India passenger plane from Ahmedabad to London carrying 242 passengers and crew crashed just moments after taking off from the Ahmedabad airport on 12 June resulting in the deaths of 241 people, with only one passenger surviving. Following the accident, an audio file claiming to be a cockpit recording from the crashed flight has gone viral on social media. The voice in the video makes a Mayday call, warning that the plane might be about to crash. A “Mayday” call is an internationally recognized distress signal used in aviation and maritime communication to indicate a life-threatening emergency. The users who share the video claims that this audio was recovered from the black box of the crashed Air India Flight in Ahmedabad.
Let’s check the truth.
Fact Check-
By closely watching the viral cockpit audio file, we noticed there is a flight number N9851L mentioned in the recording. A search for this flight led us to a full-length cockpit audio of flight N9851L, which includes the same audio heard in the viral video. It was uploaded on YouTube on 1 June 2009 under the caption “Real Life In-Flight Emergency (audio)”, and at the timestamp of 1:16 the same Mayday call can be heard.
Here we can see the aircraft registration number of N9815L is the same seen in the viral video too. Similar posts sharing the audio recording can be seen here and here, further confirming that it is not related to the AI 171 Boeing Dreamliner crash on 12 June. This confirms that the audio is not related to the recent Air India flight crash in Ahmedabad.
We also found that the flight number N9851L aircraft is currently owned by the US-based Westosha Flying Club, which acquired it in 1986.
As per reports, The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) is thoroughly investigating the Air India flight AI 171 crash in Ahmedabad, exploring all possibilities, including sabotage, after the Boeing Dreamliner 787-8 crashed shortly after take-off. The black box data is being analysed domestically, with international observers from ICAO, the U.S. NTSB, and the UK providing technical assistance to ensure a transparent and comprehensive investigation.
According to reports, Initial information about causes leading to the accident is likely to be known in the next seven to 10 days.
Based on these evidences, we can understand that an old cockpit Mayday call audio is falsely shared linking to the AI 171 Dreamliner that crashed in Ahmedabad.
Conclusion-
Fact Crescendo found the claim made along with the viral video to be False. This viral audio is related to another flight and has been available online since 2009. It has no link to the Ahmedabad flight crash
