Against this backdrop, a video purportedly featuring Shashi Tharoor criticising US President Donald Trump has gone viral on social media. In the video, the Congress member compares Donald Trump to prior US presidents, claiming that Trump lacks the political heft, statesmanlike gravitas and intellectual quality. The users who are sharing the video claim that Tharoor made these statements during the all-party delegation visit to the US.

Fact Check- 

We started our investigation with a keyword and reverse image search on Google and the results led us to an extended version of the video uploaded by the Asia Society on YouTube on 12 September, 2024, with the caption “Jaipur Literature Festival 2024 | Shashi Tharoor: A Man for All Seasons”. 

The video featured Shashi Tharoor in an exclusive conversation with India Today Group Chairman and Editor-in-Chief Aroon Purie on various issues regarding Indian and American politics. You can see the viral video at the timestamp of 12:40 when Aroon Purie asks Tharoor, “What do you think about Trump?” 

This indicates that this viral video is not related to Tharoor’s recent visit to the US. Trump did not hold the office of US President in September 2024 and was elected on 20 January, 2025.

Tharoor posted the same video on 15 September, 2024, and he can be seen wearing the same attire.

The day after the event, on 11 September 2024, the official accounts of the Jaipur Literature Festival and Asia Society shared various images from the talk on Instagram.

Meanwhile, Shashi Tharoor spoke to a select group of important members of the Indian-American community on Saturday, May 24, at an event organized by the Consulate General of India in New York. There, he stated that the time had come for India to set up a “new bottom line” in its relations with Pakistan.

Based on all these evidences it is clear that the viral video of Shashi Tharoor taking a dig at Donald Trump is not recent.
