Fact Check
We started our investigation by taking some screenshots from the viral video and conducting a reverse image search. This led us to a Facebook post where the viral video was uploaded on 11 May 2015. According to the caption, the video shows an explosion in the Nuqoum Mountain in Yemen.
Taking the clue, we conducted a relevant keyword search. This led us to a report published on 12 May 2015, which contained an image similar to the screenshots from the viral video.
The report read, “Residents of the Yemeni capital, Sanaa, said on Monday that the explosions that occurred at weapons depots on Mount Nuqum in the capital were the most severe since the start of the Saudi-led military operation “Decisive Storm” on March 26. Residents told Anadolu Agency that explosions resulting from coalition airstrikes targeting weapons depots controlled by the Houthis and forces loyal to ousted President Ali Abdullah Saleh on Monday evening turned the capital’s sky into an unprecedented flame, while shrapnel from the weapons flew into most of the city’s streets. Residents reported that the explosions lasted for more than an hour, causing unprecedented terror among the people. The “Sa’a News” website reported that missiles were fired from an air defence warehouse on Mount Nuqum and fell on many neighbourhoods in the capital, Sana’a, killing and wounding many civilians. Witnesses told Akhbar Al-Sa’a that in the Al-Da’iri area, a rocket fell on a house, injuring and killing nine people. In the political district, a citizen was killed when a Katyusha rocket fell on him, tearing him to pieces. In Al-Hasaba, three rockets fell in one alley, behind the Ministry of Interior. On Al-Hasaba Road, several rockets also fell near Marib Street. A violent explosion occurred at Al-Shaab School in a slaughterhouse, believed to be a rocket that had returned from flying rockets, which terrified residents. In the Al-Safiyah area, a rocket fell next to Al-Safiyah Forest, but it did not explode. Dozens of other missiles were fired into different areas of the capital, Sana’a, and ambulances were heard roaming dozens of streets in the capital. The death toll is not yet known, but doctors reported a state of alert in most of the capital’s hospitals. While the Yemeni people awaited the humanitarian truce announced by the Saudi Foreign Minister last Friday, Monday’s explosions were the most terrifying.”
A similar video was uploaded on a YouTube channel on 18 May 2015. According to the description, the video shows an explosion in Yemen on 11 May 2015.
