A video of a protest in an Indian village has gone viral on social media. Several Pakistani users have shared the clip, falsely claiming that members of the Sikh community in Amritsar raised slogans against the Indian Army. The video has also been shared widely on Facebook too. The screenshot shows the video being shared with the false claim on Facebook.

In our fact-check, we found that the video is of a protest that took place in Akhara village of Ludhiana on 26th April this year. The people in the video are protesting against a biogas plant and the police for using force against the protestors.

Fact Check

We did a Google reverse image search which led us to a post by the Congress MLA from Adampur, Sukhwinder Singh Kotli. Mr. Kotli has shared a similar video in which Punjab police can be seen charging at some protesters with lathis.

On closely comparing the viral video with the above video, we noticed both are from the same location. The white coloured house seen in the background in the PTC video is the same house seen in the viral video. An image comparison given below will make it clear.

As per Mr. Kotli, the video depicts police charging at farmers protesting against a biogas plant in Akhara village, Jagraon, Ludhiana. Similar videos were found on Facebook after searching with related keywords, including one posted by local journalist Dalwinder Singh Rachhin, which is shown below.

The post states that the police resorted to a lathi charge against residents of Akhara village who were protesting against a biogas plant. The police also destroyed tents and sheds set up by the protesters. The same white-coloured house seen in the viral video can also be seen in the video shared by Mr. Rachhin.

According to a report by The Times of India (TOI), the villagers have been protesting against the biogas plant in Akhara village of Jagraon, in Ludhiana district, Punjab, citing health concerns. On Saturday, April 26, 2025, a large police force carried out a mild lathi charge after the protesters ignored repeated requests to call off the demonstration, the report said.

We contacted the Ludhiana Rural Police and enquired about the viral video. The Police confirmed to us that the viral video is indeed from the demonstrations that took place on 26 April 2025 at Akhara village in Ludhiana.

Conclusion

Our fact-check confirms that the video being shared as showing Sikhs in Amritsar protesting against the Indian Army is actually from an unrelated protest in Ludhiana. On April 26, 2025, residents of Akhara village in Jagraon, Ludhiana, staged a protest against a biogas plant, citing health concerns. The viral video depicts this protest.
