Old Video From Tamil Nadu Going Viral As Army Convoy Being Attacked In Assam.

Recently, a video was uploaded on an X-handle “Islamabad Insider” claiming that the locals from Assam attacked an army convoy in Guwahati. The video shows people attacking army vehicles on a road. Sharing the video, the user wrote, “BREAKING

Locals in Assam attacked an Indian Army convoy near Guwahati.

Reinforcement troops from 25 & 7 Assam units — en route from Nagaland to Kashmir — were ambushed near Kamakhya Temple.

Rising anger over Modi regime’s oppression & false flags is fueling internal unrest.”

However, as we investigated, we came to know that the claim was false. The viral video is old and even not from Assam. Here’s the fact check.

Fact Check

We started our investigation by taking some screenshots from the viral video and conducting a reverse image search. This led us to a YouTube channel where a longer version of the video was uploaded on 3 May 2009. The description of the video reads, “Periyar DK activists attack Indian military vehicles which they alleged were transporting military hardware to Sri Lankan government”

Taking this clue, using relevant keywords we found a report published on a website on 2 May 2009 which contained a longer version of the viral video. According to the report, “Activists belonging to the pro-Tamil nationalist Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam (PDK) attacked a convoy of military trucks of the Indian Army allegedly transporting weapons to Sri Lanka. Five trucks were damaged in the attack. Mortar shells were found in the trucks, sources in Chennai said.”

Another report published on NDTV on 2 May 2009 read, “Agitating activists of pro-LTTE outfits in Coimbatore blocked a convoy of 80 military vehicles at nearby Nilambur on Saturday and damaged some of the trucks alleging that the materials being transported were meant for Sri Lanka.

Workers of Periyar Dravida Kazhagam, MDMK and some other outfits blocked the army vehicles, pulled out drivers and assistants of four vehicles and removed materials like tents, maps and training equipment, police said.

They also deflated the tyres and broke the window screens of the trucks.

Military personnel accompanying the trucks retaliated by hitting the activists with iron rods and wooden poles used for pitching tents. A TV reporter covering the event sustained minor injuries, police said.

Col Ajay Sharma of Madukarai regiment, who also reached the spot, told reporters that the men were coming from Hyderabad after training. The army personnel left with their vehicles after police intervened.

The convoy was carrying materials from Hyderabad to Maddukkarai regiment near here, police said. Some activists were “secured”, they said.

The pro-LTTE activists have been alleging that India is providing arms to Lankan Army, which the Indian officials have denied.

Meanwhile, Additional Director General of Police K Rajendran said in a release in Chennai that Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam activists had spread rumours that the army trucks were carrying weapons to Sri Lanka.

At around 3.45 pm, over 100 PDK volunteers stopped the trucks and damaged the windscreens and set ablaze the drivers’ dresses, tent materials and plastic chairs, he said, adding that police rushed to the spot and prevented any further trouble.

Five persons, including PDK General Secretary K Ramakrishnan, were arrested and efforts were on to nab others involved in the incident, the police officer said.

He warned of stern action against those who spread rumours and indulged in unlawful activities.”

Other reports can be read here and here.

The Assam Police, on their official Facebook page, shared a screenshot of the video on 30 April 2025 with the caption, “FAKE NEWS ALERT!

The claim about an “attack on Army convoy near Kamakhya, Guwahati” is completely false.

This is a deliberate attempt to spread misinformation and incite unrest.

The X handle itself indicates the origin of the misinformation.”

This makes it clear that the viral video is old and not from Assam.

Conclusion

From our investigation, we can say that the claim is false. The viral video doesn’t show an attack on the army vehicles in Guwahati, Assam. The video shows an incident from 2009. It shows the members of PDK and MDMK damaging military vehicles on the Neelambur bypass suspecting that the Indian Army was transporting arms to be supplied to Sri Lanka.
