The data appeared to show that 71% of Amazon products were Chinese-made. However, some users questioned the data’s accuracy since the percentages totaled 162% instead of 100%.

Fact Check

Analyzing the Viral Chart

The chart comes from a 2024 analysis by Jungle Scout via ECDB, later published by Statista. It visualizes the percentage of third-party sellers who have at least one product sourced from different countries.

The data comes from a survey of 1,064 sellers out of Amazon’s reported 9.7 million worldwide sellers in 2023, providing a limited sample of the overall marketplace.

And the reason that the percentages on the chart add up to 162%, is because sellers can list products from multiple countries, so they appear in more than one category.

So, the 71% here It means that 71% of those surveyed sellers have at least one Chinese-made product in their inventory, not that 71% of Amazon’s total products come from China.

The Number of Amazon Products That Are from China

According to Statista in 2023, sellers based in China accounted for 28% of Amazon’s total sales value (GMV), up from 19% in 2018. This reflects value of sales, not number of items. Since many Chinese sellers deal in lower-cost products (like phone cases or cables), the volume might be higher.

Meanwhile, report from Marketplace Pulse shows that by 2024, more than half of Amazon’s top sellers were based in China. However, this indicates seller location, not necessarily where their products are made.

Tariffs, Sourcing, and Global Shifts’ Impact on Amazon

Recent trade tensions between the U.S. and China have shaped this discussion. On April 2, 2025, the U.S. increased tariffs on Chinese goods to 145%, and China responded with 125% tariffs.

According to Amazon CEO Andy Jassy, these changes will likely increase prices for consumers, though Amazon is trying to reduce the impact through bulk purchases and new supplier agreements.

A recent PYMNTS report shows how these tariffs are affecting major retailers. Many Amazon sellers are now looking to sell in other countries or source products from places like Southeast Asia and Latin America to avoid the high tariffs. However, this change is happening slowly because China still offers competitive prices and well-established manufacturing networks.

Summary

The viral claim that “71% of goods on Amazon come from China” misinterprets survey data about seller sourcing patterns. The actual data shows that 71% of surveyed sellers have at least one Chinese product in their inventory. Chinese sellers make up 28% of Amazon’s total sales money in 2023. So while China plays an important role in Amazon’s marketplace, the actual numbers tell a different story than what the viral claim suggests.
