Old video of people pelting stones at police in Nepal shared as West Bengal

This viral video is from Tinkune, Nepal, and it predates the violence in West Bengal

Unrest broke out in West Bengal during protests against the Waqf (Amendment) Act on 11 April. Amid this, a video of police protecting itself from stone pelters is going viral on social media with the claim that it shows a recent incident during the ongoing violence in West Bengal.

Fact Check-

By performing a reverse image search with the key frames of the viral video led us to a Facebook post of March 2025 shared by Explore Nepal’s page. The caption states, “The boys expressed their anger during the protest, but did they die in police custody”?

We found many similar videos featuring similar visuals from a different angle, posted on 28 March 2025, confirming that it predates the violence in West Bengal. The posts stated that the visuals are from Tinkune, Nepal.

After carefully reviewing the video, we discovered that ‘Ghar Aangan Restro & Sekuwa’ is written somewhere in it. 

While we looked it up on Google, we discovered that it is a restaurant in Tinkune, Kathmandu. We found many images of it on Google Earth that are identical to the location in the viral video.

To verify whether a stone-pelting incident occurred in Nepal in March 2025, we conducted keyword search and found several reports confirming the incident. According to reports, on 28 March 2025 in Kathmandu, Nepal, a clash broke out between monarchy supporters and security forces after protesters tried to break a police cordon. The violence led to two deaths, several injuries, and incidents of arson targeting homes, buildings, and vehicles.

The video report by the Wion states, “A curfew has been imposed in Nepal’s Birgunj following violent clashes during a Hanuman Jayanti procession. According to reports, unidentified individuals pelted stones at the religious parade triggering clashes between these troops. Police tried to fire tear gas to bring the situation under control and in the ensuing clash several police personnel and residents were injured”.

Conclusion-

Fact Crescendo found that the claim made along with the viral video to be False. This viral video is from Tinkune, Nepal, and it predates the violence in West Bengal.
