Old video of woman self-immolating in Lucknow falsely shared as recent

This is an old video from Lucknow dated October 2020.

A video showing a woman setting herself on fire, while a police officer tries to extinguish the flames nearby is going viral on social media with the claim that the woman set herself on fire in protest, outside Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s office in Lucknow, due to lack of justice. In the footage, a woman is seen pouring flammable substance on herself in front of a large gate and lighting it on fire. Immediately, the police officers present hurry to extinguish her fire.

Fact Check- 

A reverse image search of the video keyframes led to several news reports regarding the video. According to National Herald report published on 13 October 2020, this is an incident that happened in Lucknow in October 2020. The woman in the video is Anjana Tiwari, 35 years old. She was a resident of Maharajganj, Uttar Pradesh.

Anjana Tiwari, who fell in love with Asif after divorcing her ex-husband Akhilesh Tiwari, converted to Islam and changed her name to Aisha, married Asif. After the marriage, Asif went to Saudi Arabia for work and since then Asif’s family has been harassing her regularly. Fed up with the torture, she tried to commit suicide by pouring flammable material in front of Uttar Pradesh Vidhan Sabha. She was admitted to the Civil Hospital in Lucknow in a critical condition and died later.

In addition to this, we also found a tweet from the Lucknow Police, which states that the viral video is from 2020 and that the Hazrat Ganj police had taken action on the matter at that time. 

All these evidences clearly indicates that the incident of the viral video is not recent. This is an old video from Lucknow dated October 2020.

Conclusion- Fact Crescendo found the claim made along with the viral video to be Misleading. This is an old video from Lucknow, which shows Anjali Tiwari, also known as Ayesha, attempting to self-immolate after complaining about domestic violence in October 2020. She was then rushed to the hospital in a severe condition and died later.
