Video of Ghana market fire goes viral as Hindu colony burning in Bangladesh

The viral video shows a fire outbreak at the Kantamanto Market in Ghana, earlier this year. It has no link to Bangladesh.

A video showing fire spreading across a large area and thick smoke filling the sky and people moving amidst the debris is going viral on social media with the claim that it depicts a Hindu colony being burnt down in Bangladesh.

Fact Check- 

We started our investigation with a reverse image search on Google and the results led us to a Twitter post uploaded on 02 January 2025. The video’s description and voiceover indicate that it captures a fire accident at Kantamanto, a clothing market area in Ghana, a country in West Africa.

Using these hints, we conducted a keyword search and found a report by GHANA NEWS TV carrying an extended version of the viral video. It was uploaded on 2 January 2025. The description part states, “A fire outbreak at Kantamanto market in Accra caused significant damage early Thursday morning. Over 100 shops were razed down in the blaze, which began around 1:00 am.” 

According to media reports fire broke out in the Kantamanto market in the early hours of 02 January 2025, destroying hundreds of stalls and causing millions of dollars in losses.

Reports suggest that one person died and several others were injured in the incident. Environmental group Greenpeace estimates at least 30,000 people work at the market, processing millions of second-hand items of clothing, mostly from the West.

Thus, taking account of all these evidences, we can understand that video of a fire outbreak in a market in Ghana falsely shared as footage of a Hindu colony being burnt down in Bangladesh.
