However, as we investigated, we came to know that the claim was false. The video is from 2011. Here’s the fact check.

Fact Check

We started our investigation by taking some screenshots from the viral video and conducting a reverse image search. This led us to a Facebook post on 4 July 2020 that contained the viral video. According to the caption, the video is from the 2011 Japan Tsunami.

Taking this clue, using relevant keywords we found an Instagram post that contained the viral video. The caption of the video read, “The 2011 Japan tsunami, also known as the Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami, occurred on March 11, 2011. It was triggered by a massive undersea earthquake with a magnitude of 9.0 off the coast of the Tōhoku region of Japan. This earthquake was one of the strongest ever recorded, and it generated a powerful tsunami with waves that reached up to 40 meters (131 feet) in some areas.

The tsunami devastated coastal towns, sweeping away buildings, infrastructure, and vehicles. It caused widespread destruction, particularly in the Miyagi, Iwate, and Fukushima prefectures. The disaster claimed the lives of over 15,000 people, with thousands more injured or missing.”

We found another similar video on a YouTube channel. According to the caption, the video was from the Japan Tsunami and earthquake in Miyako City, Iwate Pref.

We found another similar video uploaded on the official YouTube channel of the Associated Press on 14 March 2011. The description of the video reads, “Dramatic new pictures have emerged of a tsunami wave smashing into the Japanese town of Miyako on Friday.  The wave crashes over the seawall carrying away everything in its path, including cars and boats.  (March 13)”

This makes it clear that the viral video is from the 2011 Japan Tsunami.

Conclusion

From our investigation, we can say that the claim is false. The viral video is not from 2025. It shows the Japan Tsunami in 2011.
