Consumer Safety Fact Check

McDonald’s scamming customers with the quantity of fries?? No.. The viral claim is false.

A video is going viral on social media in which a person claims that McDonald’s is scamming customers by selling the same quantity of fries in small, medium, and large packs. At the beginning of the video, the person pours fries from a small pack into a medium pack, which appears to fill it completely. The same experiment is then repeated with a large pack, showing that all three sizes contain the same amount of fries.

In the video, the person can be heard saying, “I am ordering fries 1 small, 1 medium and 1 large pack and now I am waiting for the order. We have ordered small, medium and large and we will check all three whether they have equal quantity of fries or not. Today we will know the truth. Now our order has arrived and we will check whether the myth is true or false. Now, I am pouring the fries from the small pack in the corner, and then I am keeping the medium fries at another side. I am also keeping fries from the larger pack on another side.

Now I am putting fries from the small pack into the medium pack. As I am putting the fries, the medium pack is getting filled. Now as I had put fries from the small pack into the medium one, it got completely filled. Now I am going to fill medium fries into the large pack. If the large pack is completely filled then I will be sure these people are looting. Now see, this pack is also completely filled. There is only a difference of 5 to 10 fries. The small fries pack has become medium and the medium one has become large. This means this is a real scam. Share this video with people who love McDonald’s.

Fact Check-

The first few seconds of the video shows someone pouring the same fries from small pack to medium pack and then to large pack. The video shows that the same quantity of fries fill all the three packets completely.

We found that none of the three packets inside are visible on camera. This raises suspicion about whether there is anything inside the packets, which may have caused the fries to fill them.

After analyzing the complete video, we noticed something unusual towards the end. When the person was filling the fries into the large pack, the pack appeared to be only half full, with just four to five fries remaining in his hand. However, at that moment, there was a cut in the video, and in the next frame, the pack suddenly appeared completely full. It is highly unlikely that just four to five fries could fill the remaining half of the pack, suggesting possible manipulation in the video.

The Fact Crescendo team visited a McDonald’s outlet and conducted the entire experiment. We observed that the quantity of fries varies across different pack sizes. When the fries from a small pack were poured into a medium pack, the medium pack did not fill completely. Similarly, when the fries from a medium pack were poured into a large pack, the large pack remained partially empty.

According to the information available on the McDonald’s website, the approximate portion weights of our fries are as follows: Small Fries weigh around 80g, Medium Fries around 114g, and Large Fries around 150g.

A youtuber also conducted a similar experiment weighing fries of small, medium and large packs. The weight of the small pack fries is 65 grams, medium is 101 grams and the weight of the large pack fries is 167 grams.

Conclusion:

Fact Crescendo found the claim to be false. The quantity of small, medium and large fries are different and there is no scam in it. When transferring fries between packs, larger packs were not completely filled confirming that the portions of all the fries’ packs are different.
