Old Video Of PM Modi Regarding Circulation Of New Currency Notes Went Viral With Misleading Claims.

Recently a video of Prime Minister Narendra Modi announcing the issue of new currency notes went viral on social media. In the video, PM Modi can be heard saying that a completely newly designed Rs 500 and Rs 2000 notes will be brought into circulation. Sharing the video on social media, users are claiming that new Rs 500 and Rs 2000 notes will be brought into circulation in the year 2025.

However, as we investigated, we came to know that the video was old. Here’s the fact check.

Fact Check 

In the video, the logo of Times Now can be seen. Taking this clue, we started our investigation by conducting a relevant keyword search. This led us to a report published in The Economic Times on 8 November 2016. The report featured the viral video where PM Modi can be heard saying that new Rs 500 and Rs 2000 notes will be issued. The report read, “Currency notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 denominations will not be legal tender beginning November 9. This was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a special address to the nation. He said the move was aimed at curbing the negative impact of fake currency, black money and corruption on the nation’s economy.”

We found the full version of the video on the official YouTube channel of Times Now uploaded on 9 November 2016. In this video PM Modi can be heard announcing demonetization. The viral clip can be seen from the timestamp 32:30.

Further, we found the full version of the video on the Official YouTube channel of PM Narendra Modi streamed on 8 November 2016. From the timestamp 32:13, the viral clip can be seen.

It is worth mentioning that in an address to the nation on 8 November 2016, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that currency notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 denominations will not be legal tender from 9 November 2016. He said that the decision was made aiming to abolish the impact of corruption, black money and terrorism on the nation’s economy. An announcement of issuing new notes of Rs 500 and Rs 2000 was also made in that “address to the nation”. 

We searched for recent news reports regarding the circulation of new Rs 500 and Rs 2000 notes in the coming year, but couldn’t find any such report. 

This makes it clear that the claim is misleading. The video of PM Modi’s announcement regarding the circulation of new currency notes is from 2016.

Conclusion 

From our investigation, we can say that the claim is misleading. The video of PM Narendra Modi’s announcement regarding the circulation of new Rs 500 and Rs 2000 notes is from 2016.
