Old image from Germany shared as the recent farmers’ protest in London

This viral image shows a protest in Germany and it dates back to December 2023. It has no link to the recent protest.

On 19 November, an estimated 13,000 British farmers converged on Parliament Square in London to protest the planned agricultural inheritance taxation policies. Against this backdrop, an image of people standing next to the tractors lined up on the street is going viral on social media with the claim that it is from a recent farmers’ protest in London.

Fact Check-

We started our investigation by running a Google reverse image and keyword search, whose results led us to a Reuters report featuring the same viral image published on 18 December 2023 with a headline, “German farmers protest with tractors against austerity measures”. The caption of the image states, “People stand beside tractors, as German farmers take part in a protest against the cut of vehicle tax subsidies, near the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, Germany, December 18, 2023”.

In further search, we found a DW News report also from December 2023. As per the report, German farmers from all over the country brought their tractors to Berlin to protest against the government’s decision to scrap the diesel fuel subsidies and no tax breaks for purchasing agricultural and forestry vehicles or machinery.

We found several news reports regarding this event. As per the euro news report, “The protest is against the government’s plan to remove tax privileges and subsidies which farmers currently benefit from. The government says the measures should help protect the climate”.

Taking account of these evidences we can understand that the viral image is from Germany and it is unrelated to the current farmers’ protest in London.
