However, as we investigated, we came to know that the claim was false. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s name has not been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. Here’s the fact check.

Fact Check

We started our investigation by conducting a relevant keyword search. This led us to a report published in The Hindustan Times on 16 March 2023. The report read, “Deputy leader of the Norwegian Nobel Committee Asle Toje on Thursday dismissed media reports claiming he said Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the “biggest contender” of the Nobel Peace Prize. Toje’s clarification came after some TV channels and a now-viral tweet claimed that Toje, during this visit to India, had tipped PM Modi to be the “biggest contender” for the Nobel Peace Prize”.

A video of Asle Toje dismissing the rumour can be seen below.

In another video, when Toje was asked about Narendra Modi’s possibility of becoming a Nobel Peace Ambassador, he said, “I think any leader in the world should aspire to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. Any leader should try to do enough for peace in the world to deserve this award, but the world comes first and award comes next”.

What Asley Toje said actually?

Speaking to the media, Toje appreciated India’s intervention to remind Russia of the consequences of using nuclear weapons. He also said that he was happy with the work done by Prime Minister Modi to maintain peace in mankind.

However, he did not name Prime Minister Modi as a strong contender for the Nobel Peace Prize, as claimed by several media outlets.

It is worth mentioning that the Norwegian Nobel Prize Committee is responsible for selecting the winners. The committee does not announce the names of the nominees, nor does it inform the media or the candidates. The information in the Nobel Committee’s nomination database is not made public for fifty years.

This makes it clear that Asle Toje’s remark has been misinterpreted.

Conclusion

From our investigation, we can say that the claim is false. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s name has not been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. A statement from the deputy leader of the Norwegian Nobel Prize Committee, Asle Toje, has been misinterpreted and reported by several media outlets creating confusion.
