The viral image does not show Principal Geetanjali Barua of Azimpur Government Girls School & College tied to a tree

Though Geetanjali Barua, the principal of Azimpur Govt. Girls School & College, was forced to resign, the woman shown tied to the tree in the image is an alleged outsider who claims to be a former college student. 

Amidst the ongoing crisis in Bangladesh social media is abuzz with many videos, images, and news alleging that there are big attacks against the minority Hindus. In this context, an image of a woman tied to a tree has gone viral on social media with a claim that she was Geetanjali Barua, principal of Azimpur Government Girls’ School and College in Dhaka, who was allegedly pressured to resign due to her religious background. And when she refused, she was subjected to this treatment by the students.

Fact Check- 

We started our investigation by conducting a keyword and reverse image search on Google and the results led us to a Bangladeshi media outlet Ajker Patrika report with the caption, “Students threatened, former student tied to a tree in Azimpur”. The article included a video report of the same incident.

According to the report, students accused teachers of summoning former students to attack them. In retaliation, the students tied one of these former students to a tree. This incident was reported on 19 August 2024.

For further clarification we checked the official website of the Azimpur Government Girls School & College for the image of principal Geethanjali Barua found that the woman in the viral image is not her.

Additionally, the college management acknowledged through a Facebook post that the woman in the viral image is neither Principal Geetanjali Barua nor a teacher at the college.

So, it is clear that the viral image does not show Principal Geetanjali Barua of Azimpur Government Girls School & College tied to a tree.

Conclusion- 

Fact crescendo found the claim made along with the viral image to be Misleading. Though Geetanjali Barua, the principal of Azimpur Govt. Girls School & College, was forced to resign, the woman shown tied to the tree in the image is an alleged outsider who claims to be a former college student.
