Old video from Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras Stampede falsely shared linking to Bangladesh

This video is from a stampede that happened in Hathras, Uttar Pradesh in July 2024 and it is unrelated to Bangladesh.

Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled the country on August 5, after weeks of protests against a quota system for government jobs descended into violence and grew into a broader challenge to her 15-year rule. Social media is abuzz with many videos, images, and news alleging that there are big attacks against the minority Hindus in Bangladesh in this context.

Amidst this we have noticed a video showing dead bodies of women lying in what appears to be a hospital. The injured people can also be seen on stretchers, with their relatives crying and mourning nearby. The video claims that it shows the plight of Hindus in Bangladesh that they were killed by Muslims after brutal rape.

Let’s check the truth.

Fact Check-

We started our investigation by conducting a keyword and reverse image search on Google and the results led us to a similar video uploaded in an unknown YouTube channel on 3 July 2024 with the caption of Uttar Pradesh #hathras #HathrasThere was a stampede after Bhole Baba’s Satsang (Translated from Hindi). And the description states that “There was a stampede after Bhole Baba’s Satsang in Hathras, Uttar Pradesh. 122 people died due to crushing”. So, it is evident that the viral video is old and not related to the Bangladesh crisis.

Upon further search we found several media reports including similar images from the incident site in Hathras. According to the News 18 report, the stampede incident took place on 2 July during a religious congregation, resulting in the death of 116 people, including women and children. The stampede occurred during a Satsang in honour of the local Guru, Bhole Baba, also known as Narayan Sakar Hari, which was attended by around 50,000 people.
