People pushed off a building in Bangladesh goes viral with false communal claims

The viral video shows an incident from Chattogram, where Chhatra League members were pushed off a building by the anti-quota protestors. It has no communal angle.

Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled the country on August 5, after weeks of protests against a quota system for government jobs descended into violence and grew into a broader challenge to her 15-year rule. Social media is abuzz with many videos, images, and news alleging that there are big attacks against the minority Hindus in Bangladesh in this context.

Amidst this we have noticed a video showing people being pushed off the roof of a building is going viral on social media with communal claims. The caption states, “Hindu students are being thrown down from the roofs of hostels in Dhaka. Actually, Muslim terrorists surrounded the building from every door and entered the Hindu hostels with swords and knives and started killing people. Some students are hanging from the roofs and walls to get out of the buildings. They are struggling to save their lives from these Muslims”.

As per Dhaka Post report, the video captures a confrontation where protesters attacked Chhatra League members. During the altercation, some Chhatra League members were pushed off the roof of a five-story building named Mir Manzil. The report also indicates that bricks were thrown at individuals who were trying to hang on to the building’s walls and water pipes to avoid falling.

Further details from Maasranga News and Dhaka Tribune corroborate that the incident resulted in 15 Chhatra League members being injured after falling from the building. The injured were reportedly under treatment in a hospital, with some enduring serious injuries from the fall and subsequent mob beatings.

So, it is clear that the viral video was a politically charged clash between Chhatra League members and protesters, and it has no communal angle.
