Amid the Bangladesh unrest, a video of a woman signing on a paper while being surrounded by a group of people is going viral on social media claiming that she is a Hindu woman who was forced to resign from the government office.

However, as we investigated, we came to know that the claim is false and the woman seen in the video is not a Hindu. Here’s the fact check.

Fact Check

We started our investigation by taking some screenshots from the viral video and conducting a reverse image search. As a result, we found the video on X with the same claim. But another user replied to the tweet that the woman seen in the video is not a Hindu. She is Prof. Amena Begum, principal of Kabi Nazrul Government College who resigned in the face of students. Students forced her resignation due to her role in the current quota movement.

Taking this clue, we conducted a keyword search in Bengali language on Google. As a result, we found the same video on a YouTube channel uploaded on 12 August 2024. The caption of the video was in the Bengali language, the translation of which is, “Amena Begum, Principal of Kabi Nazrul Government College, resigned in the face of anti-discrimination students”.

According to the video, the principal of Kabi Nazrul Government College, Amena Begum, in the face of the students’ demands, resigned by writing ‘I resigned’ on a white paper with the principal’s signature and seal.

Moving forward, we found a news report published on the Kalbela website on 11 August 2024. A screenshot from the viral video and the piece of paper with the seal and signature of Principal Amena Begum stating “I resigned” was attached to the report.

The translation of the report read, “Amena Begum, principal of Kabi Nazrul Government College, resigned in the face of anti-discrimination students.

Today, Sunday (August 11), agitating general students blocked the principal in his office, chanting slogans of ‘fake fake’.

At that time, the principal of Kabi Nazrul Government College, Amena Begum, in the face of the students’ demands, resigned by writing ‘I resigned’ on a white paper with the principal’s signature and seal…”

Conclusion

From our investigation, we can say that the claim is misleading. The woman seen in the viral video is Amena Begum, the principal of Kabi Nazrul Government College, Dhaka. She is not Hindu as the name indicates.
