Unrelated video shared as atrocities against Hindu women in Bangladesh

The video shows an incident in which Badrunnessa College Chhatra League leaders were tied up by students in Bangladesh. It has no communal angle.

At least 232 people were killed in Bangladesh in the incidents of violence that erupted across the country following the fall of the government led by Sheikh Hasina on 5 August 2024. Amidst this, a video showing two women weeping as other women tie them up against a brick pillar has gone viral on social media. The users who share the post claims that it shows Hindus in Bangladesh. The caption states, “Save the Hindus in Bangladesh. They are being subjected to genocide by Muslims and their women are being taken captive and sold, as happened to us in Iraq”.

Fact Check- 

We started our investigation by conducting a keyword and reverse image search on Google and we found that the video was from an event that happened last month. This video has been circulating on Facebook since last month. The description of the video says that female students protesting against reservation in Bangladesh are tying female students to a pillar, who are members of Chhatra League, the student movement of Sheikh Hasina’s party, Awami League.

This incident took place in Badrunnessa College. Bangladesh’s online media Jagonews24 has also reported about this incident. According to this report, the incident took place at Begum Badrunnessa College in Bangladesh on 17 July. In this college, the pro-Awami League students were accused of hooliganism and other students tackled them.

Upon further search, we found the same video, shared by YouTube channel Dhaka Age, on 17 July 2024, which was titled ‘Badrunnessa College Chhatra League leaders were tied up by students, Video Viral’.

The young women seen in the video are members of the Awami League’s student movement. There is no communal angle in this incident.

Conclusion- 

Fact crescendo found the claim made along with the viral video to be Misleading. The video shows an incident in which Badrunnessa College Chhatra League leaders were tied up by students in Bangladesh. It has no communal angle.
