Old video of an accident of a child in a lift in Mumbai goes viral as recent

The incident happened in November 2020, when a 5-year-old child died after becoming stuck in an elevator at a housing society in Dharavi, Mumbai.

A disturbing video showing one child getting stuck in between the doors of an elevator is going viral on social media with the claim that this incident took place on 30 July, 2024, at around 7 pm, in Mumbai’s Dharavi.

Fact Check- 

We started the investigation with a reverse image search on Google and we found several news reports regarding this incident. According to The Sun report, the incident took place on 28 November, 2020 in a society in Dharavi, Mumbai, where a 5-year-old boy Mohammed Huzaifa Sheikh was killed. The time stamp of the CCTV footage also shows it as 28 November, 2020 around 12 noon.

A similar report on the official channel of ABP News, dated 28 November 2020, confirms that the video is from 2020. 

Upon relevant keywords searches we found an article by The Indian Express which identified the boy as a Hozefa Shaikh and it states “He had taken the lift to his fourth-floor home and while getting out of it, got stuck between its outer and inner doors. The local police registered an Accidental Death Report.” The report adds, “As the lift reached the fourth floor, the two sisters, one elder, the other younger, stepped out of the lift’s sliding grill and a wooden door. Before Shaikh could step out of the lift, he got locked between the wooden door that shut on him and the grill”.

Taking account of these evidences we can say that an old CCTV footage of a child getting trapped in an elevator in Mumbai’s Dharavi is circulating as a recent incident.

Conclusion- 

Fact Crescendo found the claim made along with the viral video to be Misleading. The incident happened in November 2020, when a 5-year-old child died after becoming stuck in an elevator at a housing society in Dharavi, Mumbai.
