This viral flood video is from China, not Wayanad, Kerala.

The viral video shows extreme flooding caused by heavy rainfall in Meizhou, China, in June 2024. It is unrelated to Wayanad in Kerala.

At least 151 people have died and about 186 others were injured after a series of landslides hit Kerala’s Wayanad district amid heavy rain yesterday. The landslides caused massive destruction to houses and roads, uprooted trees, and led to the water bodies to swell. Efforts to rescue and locate the missing persons are still underway with all available resources.

On this backdrop, a video showing a compound wall and gate filling with water in 5 hours (from 13 to 18) is going viral on social media, claiming to show flood visuals from Wayanad.

Fact Check-

By closely analysing the video, we can notice the timestamp, which indicates the date as 16:06:24. That indicates that the video was captured more than a month ago. After conducting a reverse image search on Google, we found the same video uploaded on YouTube on June 26, 2024, with the title Timelapse of the flooding in Meizhou, #Guangdong, #China on June 16th.

Upon further search, we found several news reports from China regarding this incident. As per reports, On June 16, 2024, Meizhou, located in Guangdong Province, China experienced severe flooding due to heavy rains. A timelapse captured the rapid rise of floodwaters, inundating streets, homes, and businesses. The Huangtian Reservoir in Huangtian Village, Pingyuan County, Meizhou City suddenly released floodwaters, causing the flood to rise rapidly by 2 meters, resulting in 38 deaths and 2 missing persons.

The severe flooding impacted the region of Meizu in Guangdong, China in June. This video captures the extent of the floodwaters and the impact on the local community.

Thus, we can clearly say an old video from China falsely shared as visuals from Wayanad, Kerala.
