2023 video of Yeti airlines Plane Crash shared as recent Nepal plane crash

The viral video shows the Yeti Airlines plane crash that occurred in January 2023.

On 24 July 2024, a Bombardier CRJ200 operated by Saurya Airlines crashed shortly after take-off at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, Nepal, killing 18 out of 19 people on board including a Yemeni national, and a child. After this incident, many posts and videos are going viral on social media. One such video is now going viral is showing the last moment before a plane crash. Users are sharing this video and claiming it to be from recent plane crash that has taken place in Nepal’s capital.

But Fact Crescendo found the viral claim false. Let’s check the truth.

We started our investigation by running a simple reverse image search on Google, with the key frames of the video and whose results led us to the shorts posted by The Economic Times on Jan 15, 2023. The clip’s caption read:” Nepal plane crash: Moment When Yeti Airlines aeroplane crashes in Pokhara“

We looked further into the web and found the same video posted on twitter also by many users on 15 January 2023 with the caption “Video of what seems to be moments before the crash of #ATR72 carrying 72 passengers near #PokharaAirport”

Thus, it is clear that the viral video does not show the recent airplane crash in Nepal. The ATR 72, operated by privately owned Yeti Airlines, crashed just before landing in the tourist city of Pokhara on 15 January 2023 in one of Nepal’s worst airplane accidents in 30 years. There were 72 people on the twin-engine aircraft including two infants, four crew and 15 foreign nationals. There were no survivors
