Many people worldwide have enjoyed the variety of cartoons and animations produced by Cartoon Network over the years. Many fans have been baffled by recurring viral posts over rumours of a potential shutdown of the Cartoon Network.

However, the Factcrescendo investigation found these claims to be misleading.

Social Media Posts

Viral social media posts in early July 2024 claimed that the Cartoon Network, a pioneer in the industry, had officially shut down. Such posts can be seen below.

These posts were widely shared among Facebook users.

Other X and TikTok platforms went viral with #RIPCartoonNetwork posts.

We also came across several posts stating that the Cartoon Network was not shutting down, but its old office premises had been shut down

Let’s find out the facts behind these viral claims.

Fact Check

Cartoon Network (often abbreviated as CN) is an American cable TV channel owned by Warner Brothers Discovery. It has been an asset of Warner Bros. Discovery for years. Inaugurated in 1992, Cartoon Network has been running for over 30 years. Many details about it can be taken from hereArchived.

Cartoon Network Rejects Speculations

First, we checked the official social media handles of the official Cartoon Network and did not come across any notice about a possible shutdown of the operations. In a press release, the Cartoon Network addressed the rumours, stating that the speculations were entirely false, as seen below.

“Cartoon Network would like to clarify that there is no truth to the speculation that the network or the studio is shutting down. With a number of recently announced greenlights, we remain committed to continually investing in innovative content that entertains and inspires our viewers across the globe.”

So, what started the #RIPCartoonNetwork trend?

The hashtag started going viral after an ‘X’ handle named ‘Animation Workers Ignited’ shared a video post with the caption “Cartoon Network is dead?” This viral post highlighted the layoffs in the animation industry, mentioning that many animators had already been unemployed for over a year despite being the linchpins who carried the sector during the COVID-19 pandemic. It urged viewers to spread the word by posting about their favourite Cartoon Network shows with the hashtag #RIPCartoonNetwork and supporting the cause.

Since the post started going viral, the same handle clarified that Cartoon Network is essentially gone, even though it continues to exist as a brand and channel.

What Happened to the Cartoon Networks’ original office building?

As some social media posts highlighted, Cartoon Networks’ operational location had indeed changed, which could have been one of the reasons for the social media row about the possible shutdown of Cartoon Network.

The original building at Burbank Headquarters had been the home of Cartoon Network Studios since 2000. Cartoon Network Studios merged with Warner Bros. Animation; they decided to shift to a new single location to manage the workflow. Here is an X message from CN’s former General Manager back in July 2023 about the last days at CN’s old premises. Here is a photo taken on the last day at the original CNS Studios in July 2023 by one of the artists, which got a lot of emotional reactions.

Since then, Holywood Production Center has shifted into Cartoon Network’s old building premises, and here is a post from June 2023 regarding the same.

In one of our previous facts checks in 2022, we addressed the merger between Cartoon Network and Warner Bros. Animation and the speculation about the possible shutdown of Cartoon Network’s operations back then.

Conclusion

Cartoon Network (CN) clarified that there is no truth in the speculation that it will shut down its operations. However, as part of the merger with Warner Brother Animations (WBA), Cartoon Network has moved from its old building to a new location. The viral videos with #RIPCartoonNetwork were created to raise awareness about issues faced in the animation industry as a whole.
