Video of a man being shot in Brazil is being falsely shared linking it to Muzaffarnagar, UP

The viral video of the shooting incident is not from Muzaffarnagar in Uttar Pradesh but from Manaus, Brazil.

A video of a man being shot multiple times by a gunman at close range is going viral on social media. It is claimed that the video is from the Muzaffarnagar district of Uttar Pradesh. The video shows a man standing on a table being shot four times before falling off. He is then shot repeatedly while on the ground, presumably killing him.

Fact Check- 

By conducting a reverse image search on one of the video’s key frames, we found the same video uploaded on Twitter on 29 June. The post is written in Portuguese and translation is, “CRAZY! Criminal records video murdering a man known as “Olhão” in the Novo Aleixo neighborhood, in Manaus”.

Keeping this in mind, we conducted keyword search and found a news report published on 28 June, which mentioned that the victim in the viral video has been identified as Lucas Pereira. He was killed by unknown gunmen while working at a construction site in Novo Aleixo in Manaus city of Brazil.

According to a report by Diario Manauara, (Manaus-based news outlet) that the incident occurred on 28 June, 2024. An anonymous gunman entered the building, shot Rodrigues several times while filming the incident, then escaped on a motorcycle with an accomplice. According to the article, the police were unable to identify the assailants, and the Specialized Homicide and Kidnapping Unit (DEHS) is investigating the murder.

After the video grabbed attention, Muzaffarnagar police confirmed that the video was not from Muzaffarnagar. The post reads: “A video of a person being shot dead is going viral on social media, with claims that it is from New Mandi police station in the Muzaffarnagar district. However, this claim is false. Legal action is being taken against the person who shared the misleading video, and a case has been registered at New Mandi police station.”
