The claim of selling popcorn by adding urine is false, the old incident has gone viral with a fake claim.

The video dates to 2022. The popcorn vendor was arrested in Lalbagh, Bengaluru, after spitting on an oil pan. The bottle seen in the viral video contains oil, not urine.

A video of police officers conducting inspection has been widely shared on social media. The video is being circulated with the claim that a member of the Muslim community in Bengaluru has been arrested for using urine instead of salt in popcorn.

Fact Check-

We started our investigation with keyword and a reverse image search on Google and the results led us to a report on the website of The News Minute published on 14 June, 2022. From this it is clear that the viral video is not recent. 

According to the news, the name of the person seen in the video is Nawaz Pasha and he used to sell popcorn in Lalbagh, Bengaluru. People accused the person of spitting in the oil of the popcorn and then selling it, after which the police reached there and arrested the person. Pasha tore open an oil packet with his hands and kept a torn fragment of the packaging in his mouth while filling the empty oil bottle and spat it. Meanwhile, a middle-aged jogger observed him spitting. Soon, a mob gathered around him, accusing him of spitting in the oil thrice.

Keeping this in mind, we investigated further and found several news articles regarding this incident from June 2022. The news can be seen here , here and here . The police had informed that the suspect had not taken care of hygiene, for which he was arrested. 

During the investigation, we found the report related to the viral claim on the official YouTube channel of The News Minute. In the video of the news published on June 20, 2022, a copy of the FIR is shown at 1.26 minutes. According to which, the person was arrested for mixing spit in popcorn oil.

Upon further search, we found a report published on The Hindu website in June 2022, which confirms that the man opened the oil packet with his teeth and not by spitting in the oil. He was later released on bail. The bottle seen in the viral video does not contain urine as claimed, but oil.
