An old image from Kolkata resurfaces claiming to be from Tamil Nadu.

The image dates back to January 2020 when PM Modi had visited Kolkata. It has no link to Tamil Nadu

Following the conclusion of election campaign for Lok Sabha Elections, Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu on 31 May. P M Modi will meditate at the Vivekananda Rock Memorial, a monument built in tribute to Swami Vivekananda till 1 June. Against this backdrop, an image showing Go Back Modi’ slogan painted on a street road is being shared on social media claiming it as the anti-Modi graffiti displayed on a street in Tamil Nadu.

Fact Check

A reverse image search on Google led us to a similar image in a tweet made by Kolkata-based Journalist Mayukh Ranjan Ghosh on 11 January 2020. Mayukh Ranjan Ghosh reported it as an image from Esplanade, the busiest street in Kolkata.

Moving forward, we have come across news reports from January 2020 which carried a similar image. As per reports, the image is of a protest against CAA and NRC in Kolkata.

On carefully looking at the viral image, we noticed a text on the building besides the road that read: ‘Metro Channel Control Post Hare Street Police Station.’ 

Taking a cue from here, a search on Google maps with relevant keywords led us to the location which is indeed in Kolkata. The viral image is related to protest in Kolkata against CAA and NRC and has nothing to do with Tamil Nadu.  

Conclusion

Fact Crescendo found the claim made along the viral image to be False. The image dates back to January 2020 when PM Modi had visited Kolkata. It has no link to Tamil Nadu.
